Operating Room (OR)

The following are key considerations for the design and construction of an operating room:

  1. Standards for the Air Conditioning System – The operating room must have an air system that controls:
    • Temperature
    • Humidity
    • Air pressure (positive and negative pressure)
    • Air cleanliness
    • Air circulation
    • Air changes
  2. Standards for the Lighting System – Proper surgical lighting must be provided for optimal visibility during procedures.
  3. Standards for the Medical Gas System – The operating room must be equipped with a compliant system for medical gases used during surgery.
  4. Standards for Wall and Ceiling Systems – Walls and ceilings should be constructed using appropriate materials. Currently, compact laminate with laboratory-grade specification is commonly used.
  5. Standards for Operating Room Doors – Operating room doors come in various types, such as:
    • Hermetic
    • Airtight
    • Semi-airtight
These doors must support appropriate opening/closing mechanisms and maintain controlled airflow.
  6. Flooring Standards – The operating room floor should consist of seamless rubber flooring that does not generate static electricity, with a minimum thickness of 2 mm.
